How to Fix a Print Spooler Error on Windows 7/XP

The Print Spooler service is the service that directs information to your printers. If it is not running, you will not be able to print anything.

Symptoms:

You see an error stating that your Printing Spooling Service has been shut off.

You restart the service in services.msc but it turns off by itself.

Difficulty Level: Semi-Easy

Solution: 

Windows 7

  1. Go to and right click Properties on C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe
  2. Click on the Security Tap > Advanced > Owner
  3. Take ownership of the file and give full permission to the file.
  4. Close dialog window when finished.
  5. Run your Command Prompt as an Administrator (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt [Right click > Run as Administrator])
  6. Type the following: del /Q C:WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS\*.*
  7. Press Enter
  8. Ctrl+R (Run)
  9. Type: services.msc
  10. Press Enter
  11. Start Print Spooler service

For Windows XP:

  1. Run your Command Prompt as an Administrator (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt [Right click > Run as Administrator])
  2. Type the following: del /Q C:WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS\*.*
  3. Press Enter
  4. Ctrl+R (Run)
  5. Type: services.msc
  6. Press Enter
  7. Start Print Spooler service
